When you start speaking Japanese, or imagine traveling to Japan, don’t you find yourself thinking, “I want to do this, I want to try that”?

Like…
“I want to see the brilliant autumn leaves!”
“I want to enjoy sweets and matcha at a local café (and of course order in Japanese!)”
“I want to watch an anime without subtitles, before it’s even released in my own country!”

For expressing desires like these, that’s where たい form comes in!

It’s an N5-level grammar point, and it’s super useful because you’ll use it every day to talk about what you want (or don’t want) to do.

たい vs. ほしい

たい is used for things you want to do (actions).
日本に行きたい。
にほん に いき たい。
nihon ni ikitai.
I want to go to Japan.

ほしい is used for things you want to have / want someone to do.
新しいパソコンがほしい。
あたらしい ぱそこん が ほしい。
atarashii pasokon ga hoshii.
I want a new computer.

💡Tip:
When expressing what someone else wants to do, Japanese often avoids 〜たい and instead uses 〜たがっている to sound natural.

友だちは日本に行きたがっている。
ともだち は にほん に いき たがっている。
tomodachi ha nihon ni ikitagatte iru.
My friend wants to go to Japan.

日本の歌を聞きたい！
にほんの うたを ききたい！
nihon no uta wo kikitai!
I want to listen to Japanese songs!

このアニメを字幕なしで見たいです。
この あにめ を じまく なし で みたい です。
kono anime wo jimaku nashi de mitai desu.
I want to watch this anime without subtitles.

抹茶のケーキを食べたいです。
まっちゃ の けーき を たべたい です。
maccha no keeki wo tabetai desu.
I want to eat matcha cake.

今日はもう眠いので、宿題をしたくない。
きょう は もう ねむい ので、しゅくだい を したくない。
kyou ha mou nemui node, shukudai wo shitakunai.
I’m already sleepy today, so I don’t want to do homework.

ずっとあなたに会いたかったです。
ずっと あなた に あいたかった です。
zutto anata ni aitakatta desu.
I’ve always wanted to see you.

そのことは、知りたくなかったです。
その こと は、しりたくなかった です。
sono koto ha, shiritakunakatta desu.
I didn’t want to know about that.

anata ha ima, nani ga shitai desu ka? watashi ha... yamamori raamen ga tabetai desu!
What do you want to do right now? As for me… I want to eat a mountain-sized bowl of ramen!
