Have you ever had a conversation like this?

You’re talking with friends and someone asks “Which Japanese food do you like the most?”

Sushi? Ramen? Tempura? Karaage? Tamago-sando?
You like all of them… but you have to choose one.

Or maybe the question is about anime.
“Out of all the anime you’ve watched, which one is your favorite?”

There are so many great choices, right?
But when you want to pick number one, Japanese has a very simple and useful expression.

That’s where の中で[A]が一番（no naka de [A] ga ichiban）comes in.

It’s used when you compare three or more things and say which one stands out the most.
Food, places, people, anime, seasons. This pattern works for all of them!

Once you learn this grammar, you’ll be able to talk about your favorites more clearly and more naturally in Japanese.
Let’s see how it works!

とても (totemo) vs 一番 (ichiban)
Both とても and 一番 are used to talk about degree and comparison, but they are used in very different ways.

とても (totemo) - Very
とても is used to describe the degree or intensity of something.
It does not involve comparison with other items.
You are simply saying how strong your feeling or evaluation is.

このアニメはとてもおもしろいです。
この あにめ は とても おもしろい です。
kono anime ha totemo omoshiroi desu.
This anime is very interesting.

Use とても when you are describing one thing on its own, without comparing it to others.

一番 (ichiban) - The most, number one
一番 is used when you are comparing three or more things and choosing one as the most (or the least). It always implies a comparison within a group.

アニメの中で、この作品が一番おもしろいです。
あにめ の なか で、この さくひん が いちばん おもしろい です。
anime no naka de, kono sakuhin ga ichiban omoshiroi desu.
Out of all anime, this one is the most interesting.

Use 一番 when you want to rank things within a group, whether positively or negatively.

日本の山の中で、富士山が一番高いです。
にほん の やま の なか で、ふじさん が いちばん たかい です。
nihon no yama no naka de, fujisan ga ichiban takai desu.
Out of the mountains in Japan, Mt. Fuji is the tallest.

食べ物の中で、おすしが一番すきです。
たべもの の なか で、おすし が いちばん すき です。
tabemono no naka de, osushi ga ichiban suki desu.
Out of all foods, sushi is my favorite.

一週間の中で、月曜日が一番きらいです。
いっしゅうかん の なか で、げつようび が いちばん きらい です。
isshuukan no naka de, getsuyoubi ga ichiban kirai desu.
Out of the week, I dislike Monday the most.

スポーツの中で、なにが一番楽しいですか？
すぽーつ の なか で、なに が いちばん たのしい です か？
supo-tsu no naka de, nani ga ichiban tanoshii desu ka?
Out of all sports, which one is the most fun?

クラスの中で、彼女が一番人気者です。
くらす の なか で、かのじょ が いちばん にんきもの です。
kurasu no naka de, kanojo ga ichiban ninkimono desu.
Out of the class, she is the most popular person.

日本では、一年の中で五月が一番祝日が多いです。
にほん で は、いちねん の なか で ごがつ が いちばん しゅくじつ が おおい です。
nihon de ha, ichinen no naka de gogatsu ga ichiban shukujitsu ga ooi desu.
In Japan, May has the most holidays in the year.
