Have you ever been in a situation where you needed to explain why you were late, or why you need to leave early, but you wanted to sound extra polite and professional?

Maybe the train was delayed, or you have a bit of a headache. You don't want to sound like you're making a pushy excuse; you just want to explain the situation clearly and gently.

That’s where ので (node) becomes your best friend!

It’s an N5 grammar point that means "because" or "since." While it’s similar to から (kara), ので is much softer and more objective. It’s the perfect way to state a reason without sounding like you're forcing your opinion on someone.

Whether you are talking to your boss, a teacher, or hearing an announcement at a train station, you will hear ので everywhere!

から (kara) vs ので (node)
Both mean "because," but they have different "vibes."

から (kara)
から is more subjective and personal. It focuses on your own reason or excuse and can sometimes sound a bit strong or pushy. It’s great for talking with friends!

暑いから、まどを開けてください。
あつい から、まど を あけて ください。
atsui kara, mado wo akete kudasai.
Open the window because (I feel) it's hot.

ので (node)
ので, on the other hand, is objective and polite. It focuses on the situation or the facts. It’s the "go-to" choice for business, formal settings, or when you want to be extra considerate.

暑いので、まどを開けてもいいですか？
あつい ので、まど を あけても いい です か？
atsui node, mado wo aketemo ii desu ka?
Since it is hot, is it okay if I open the window?

バスが 遅れたので、遅刻しました。
ばす が おくれた ので、ちこく しました。
basu ga okureta node, chikoku shimashita.
Since the bus was late, I was late.

明日は早く起きるので、もう寝ます。
あした は はやく おきる ので、もう ねます。
ashita ha hayaku okiru node, mou nemasu.
I will wake up early tomorrow, so I'm going to sleep now.

外は寒いので、コートを着て出かけてください。
そと は さむい ので、こーと を きて でかけて ください。
soto ha samui node, kooto wo kite dekakete kudasai.
It's cold outside, so please wear a coat when you go out.

危ないので、下がってお待ちください。
あぶない ので、さがって おまち ください。
abunai node, sagatte omachi kudasai.
Because it is dangerous, please stand back and wait.

部屋が暗いので、電気をつけましょう。
へや が くらい ので、でんき を つけましょう。
heya ga kurai node, denki wo tsukemashou.
Since the room is dark, let's turn on the lights.

日本語が好きなので、勉強しています。
にほんご が すき な ので、べんきょう しています。
nihongo ga suki na node, benkyou shiteimasu.
Because I like Japanese, I am studying it.

少し 大変なので、手伝ってもらえると助かります。
すこし たいへん な ので、てつだって もらえる と たすかります。
sukoshi taihen na node, tetsudatte moraeru to tasukarimasu.
