Here we go again with another Japanese particle!

Have you ever wanted to say “until,” “up to,” or even “as far as” in Japanese?

Maybe you’re planning your trip and want to say, “The museum is open until 6 p.m.”
Or you’ve just finished a long walk and want to say, “I walked all the way to Tokyo Tower!”

In Japanese, the word for “until” or “up to” is まで (made).
It’s an N5 grammar point and one of the simplest yet most powerful particles in Japanese. Depending on the situation, まで can express time, distance, or even emotional extent, like saying “even to that point.”

Let’s explore how flexible this little word can be!

に (ni) vs. まで (made)
Both particle に and まで can mark a destination, but there’s a key difference.
に simply indicates the goal or arrival point, while まで emphasizes the end point of movement or time, how far something continues.

学校に行きます。
がっこう に いきます。
gakkou ni ikimasu.
I go to school. (Focus: destination)

学校まで歩きます。
がっこう まで あるきます。
gakkou made arukimasu.
I walk up to school. (Focus: distance or limit of the action)

💡 Tip:
まで is very often used together with から (kara) to show a range, like “from A to B.”

9時から5時まで働きます。
くじ から ごじ まで はたらきます。
kuji kara goji made hatarakimasu.
I work from 9 to 5.

日本語を、３時まで勉強します。
にほんご を、さんじ まで べんきょう します。
nihongo wo, sanji made benkyou shimasu.
I’ll study Japanese until 3 o’clock.

駅まで歩きました。
えき まで あるきました。
eki made arukimashita.
I walked up to the station.

日本語で、100まで数えてください。
にほんご で、ひゃく まで かぞえて ください。
nihongo de, hyaku made kazoete kudasai.
Please count to 100 in Japanese.

彼女は手伝ってくれるだけでなく、お金まで出してくれた。
かのじょ は てつだって くれる だけ で なく、おかね まで だして くれた。
kanojo ha tetsudatte kureru dake de naku, okane made dashite kureta.
She not only helped me but even paid money for me.

東京から大阪まで新幹線で行きます。
とうきょう から おおさか まで しんかんせん で いきます。
toukyou kara oosaka made shinkansen de ikimasu.
I’ll take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka.

いつまでにこの申込書を提出すればいいですか？
いつ まで に この もうしこみしょ を ていしゅつ すれば いい です か？
itsu made ni kono moushikomisho wo teishutsu sureba ii desu ka?
By when should I submit this application form?

<Conversational Example>
A: このあと一緒にカラオケ行こう！
この あと いっしょ に からおけ いこう！
kono ato issho ni karaoke ikou!
Let’s go to karaoke after this!

B: いきたい！この宿題が終わるまで待ってくれる？
いきたい！この しゅくだい が おわる まで まって くれる？
ikitai! kono shukudai ga owaru made matte kureru?
I want to! Can you wait until I finish this homework?

A: もちろん！声が出なくなるまで歌おう！
もちろん！こえ が でなく なる まで うたおう！
mochiron! koe ga denaku naru made utaou!
Of course! Let’s sing until we lose our voices!
