When you want to give someone a choice in English, you say “or”, like “coffee or tea?”

In Japanese, we use the particle か (ka) for the same purpose. Super simple, right?

Think about situations like..

“Do you want sushi or ramen?”
“Shall we go to karaoke or watch a movie?”

In all of these, か is doing the work, connecting the options so the listener knows they’re supposed to choose.

Shall we check it out?

[Choice A] + か + [Choice B] + か + [Choice C] …
「か」 is flexible! You can use it not only for two choices, but also to line up three or more options in a natural way.

それとも (soretomo)
Use when offering a choice in a question. Often comes at the start of the second option.

コーヒーにしますか？ それとも お茶にしますか？
こーひー に します か？ それとも おちゃ に します か？
koohii ni shimasu ka? soretomo ocha ni shimasu ka?
Will you have coffee? Or tea?

または (mata ha)
More formal, often used in writing, instructions, or official documents.

パスポート または 身分証明書を お見せください。
ぱすぽーと または みぶんしょうめいしょ を おみせ ください。
pasupooto mata ha mibun shoumeisho wo omise kudasai.
Please show your passport or an ID card.

💡 Tips:
か is the most basic and common “or.”
それとも is mostly for spoken questions.
または is more formal/written.

ケーキ か アイスを食べたい。
けーき か あいす を たべたい。
keeki ka aisu wo tabetai.
I want to eat cake or ice cream.

いぬ か ねこ か とり、どのペットを飼いたいですか？
いぬ か ねこ か とり、どの ぺっと を かいたい です か？
inu ka neko ka tori, dono petto wo kaitai desu ka?
Do you want to have a dog, a cat, or a bird?

行く か 行かない か、早く決めてください。
いく か いかない か、はやく きめて ください。
iku ka ikanai ka, hayaku kimete kudasai.
Decide quickly whether you’re going or not.

このかばんは 高いか 安いか、よく分からない。
この かばん は たかい か やすい か、よく わからない。
kono kaban ha takai ka yasui ka, yoku wakaranai.
I’m not sure if this bag is expensive or cheap.

週末は 海に行くか 山に行くか、友達とそうだんしています。
しゅうまつ は うみ に いく か やま に いく か、ともだち と そうだん しています。
shuumatsu ha umi ni iku ka yama ni iku ka, tomodachi to soudan shiteimasu.
We’re discussing whether to go to the sea or the mountains this weekend.

  This particle works with nouns, verbs, adjectives, and even full phrases. It’s super common in daily conversations when you want someone to choose between options.

So that’s how we use the particle か in Japanese!
It’s simple but super useful whenever you’re making a choice, whether it’s cake or ice cream, the sea or the mountains.

あなたはこの後、ソファでゴロゴロするか、ひかり先生と日本語を勉強するか、きめましたか？
あなた は この あと、そふぁ で ごろごろ する か、ひかり せんせい と にほんご を べんきょう する か、きめましたか？
anata ha kono ato, sofa de gorogoro suru ka, Hikari sensei to nihongo wo benkyou suru ka, kime mashita ka?
So, have you decided, will you lounge on the sofa, or study Japanese with Hikari-sensei?
