You know those moments when you have two or more choices and you’re trying to decide which one is better?
Like, “Taking the train is better than driving,” or “Watching anime with subtitles is better than without.”

We also do this when we ask for advice, or when someone asks us.
Maybe you’re listing pros and cons, thinking, “Should I go to this school or that one?”
Or even something deeper, like “Should I continue this relationship or not?”

That’s where ほうがいい (hou ga ii) comes in!

So whether you’re giving friendly advice or choosing the better option, ほうがいい is your phrase!

べき (beki) : stronger “should”
Expresses a stronger sense of duty or obligation than ほうがいい.
Use it when something feels like a rule or moral responsibility.

美術館では 決められた ルールに したがうべきです。
びじゅつかん で は きめられた るーる に したがうべき です。
bijutsukan de ha kimerareta ruuru ni shitagau beki desu.
At a museum, you should follow the established rules.

たらいい (tara ii) : soft suggestion
Softer and more casual than ほうがいい.
Used for friendly advice, often like “Why don’t you try ~?”

日本語を学びたいのなら、インスタでひかり先生をフォローしたらいいよ！
にほんご を まなびたい の なら、いんすた で ひかりせんせい を ふぉろー したら いい よ！
nihongo wo manabitai no nara, insuta de hikari sensei wo foroo shitara ii yo!

べき : strong obligation, rule-like.
たらいい : gentle suggestion, softer tone.

あした いつも より はやく おきる の なら、きょう は はやく ねた ほう が いい。
ashita itsumo yori hayaku okiru no nara, kyou ha hayaku neta hou ga ii.
If you need to wake up earlier than usual tomorrow, you should go to bed early tonight.

熱が 3日も下がらないなら、病院に行ったほうがいい。
ねつ が みっか も さがらない なら、びょういん に いった ほう が いい。
netsu ga mikka mo sagaranai nara, byouin ni itta hou ga ii.
If your fever hasn’t gone down for three days, you should go to the hospital.

この通りは電灯がないので、一人で歩かないほうがいい。
この とおり は でんとう が ない ので、ひとり で あるかない ほう が いい。
kono toori ha dentou ga nai node, hitori de arukanai hou ga ii.
Since this street has no lights, you’d better not walk alone.

またデート、ドタキャンされたの？もう会わないほうがいいかもね...。
また でーと、どたきゃん された の？もう あわない ほう が いい かも ね…。
mata deeto, dotakyan sareta no? mou awanai hou ga ii kamo ne...
Stood up on a date again? Maybe you’d better not see them anymore...

このお店とあの店、どっちのほうがいいかな？
この おみせ と あの みせ、どっち の ほう が いい かな？
kono omise to ano mise, docchi no hou ga ii kana?
Between this shop and that one, which is better?
