JLPT N5 - Grammar 🌟 どうやって douyatte

Japanese expression “どうやって” (dou yatte) labeled N5 on a blue background, used to ask “how” something is done or achieved.

Have you ever wanted to ask “How do I do this?” in Japanese?

You’re in Japan.
You want to buy a Shinkansen ticket, and you’re standing in front of a ticket machine.
So many buttons… so many options… and you’re thinking,
“Okay… how do I buy this?”

Or maybe you’re studying Japanese and wondering,
“How do I write this kanji?”
“How do I use this app?”
“How do people learn Japanese so fast?!”

When you want to ask about methods, ways, or steps, Japanese has a super useful and beginner-friendly word: どうやって (douyatte)!

It’s the Japanese version of “how” or “in what way.”
You use it when you want to know how to do something, how to get somewhere, or how someone did something.

Once you learn どうやって, you can ask questions more naturally. And get help more easily.
Let’s take a look at how to use どうやって in everyday Japanese!

どう (dou) vs どのように (dono youni) vs どうやって (dou yatte)
All three expressions are used to ask questions in Japanese, but they focus on different things

どう (dou) - How, what, in what condition
どう is the most general and flexible question word.
It’s used to ask about opinions, conditions, feelings, or overall impressions, rather than specific methods.

この料理、どうですか
この りょうり、どう です か?
kono ryouri, dou desu ka?
How is this dish?

Use どう when you want a general reaction or opinion, not a concrete process.

どのように (dono youni) - How, in what way (formal)
どのように is a more formal and polite way to ask “how.”
It’s often used in business situations, presentations, writing, or official explanations.

この 問題は どのように 解決しますか?
この もんだい は どのように かいけつ します か?
kono mondai ha dono you ni kaiketsu shimasu ka?
How will this problem be solved?

Use どのように when you want to sound professional or formal.

どうやって (dou yatte) - How, by what means, in what way
どうやって is used when you want to know the specific method, steps, or means to do something. It focuses on how exactly an action is done.
