JLPT N5 - Grammar ๐ ใ ใ dake
Have you ever wanted to say “only this!” or “as much as I want!” in Japanese?
Then today’s grammar is perfect for you…it’s ใ ใ (dake)!
You’ve definitely seen ใ ใ before. It shows up in conversations, textbooks, anime, everywhere.
But here’s the fun part:
ใ ใ actually has two super useful meanings at the N5 level:
only / just : choosing one thing from many
as much as / as ~ as possible : doing something fully, to your limit
Maybe your friend asks what you had for lunch, and you want to say,
“I only had onigiri today.”
Or maybe you’re at an all-you-can-eat buffet and someone tells you,
“Go ahead! Eat as much as you like!”
Both of these use ใ ใ, but in very different ways.
Let’s break them down so you can use ใ ใ naturally and confidently in your Japanese conversations!

ใใใใชใ (shika~nai) vs ใ ใ (dake)
These two often get mixed up because both are used for “only.” But! The nuance and grammar pattern are totally different.
ใใใใชใ (shika~nai)
Used only with negative sentences and expresses a strong feeling of “there is nothing except this!”
It sounds restrictive and emotional, like you have no other option.

mizu shika nomanai.
I don’t drink anything except water. (strong nuance)
ใ ใ (dake)
Neutral and simple.
It just means “only / just,” and can be used in positive or negative sentences.
There’s no emotional restriction. Just a factual limitation.
