JLPT N4 - Grammar 🌟 予定だ yoteida
Have you ever made a plan or schedule and wanted to say it naturally in Japanese?
Like, “I plan to travel to Japan next month,” or “The meeting is scheduled for Friday”?
When you come to Japan, locals might even ask you,
“What are you planning to do on this trip?”, and it’s a great chance to use this grammar point naturally!
In Japanese, we use 予定だ (よていだ / yotei da) to express a plan, intention, or scheduled event.
It’s an N4 grammar point that’s super useful when talking about future actions, appointments, or fixed plans.
It’s like saying “I’m planning to…” or “It’s scheduled to…” . It’s perfect for both daily life and business conversations.
Let’s explore how to use 予定だ and make your Japanese plans sound natural and confident!

つもりだ vs 予定だ
Both 〜つもりだ and 〜予定だ mean “plan to” or “intend to,” but there’s a difference in what kind of plan they describe.
つもりだ expresses personal intention, something you yourself are planning to do.
It’s about what’s in your mind or decision.
来年、日本で働くつもりだ。
らいねん、にほん で はたらく つもり だ。
rainen, nihon de hataraku tsumori da.
I plan (intend) to work in Japan next year.
予定だ expresses a fixed plan or schedule, something that’s already arranged or officially decided. It’s used for events, group plans, or organized situations.
来年、日本で働く予定だ。
らいねん、にほん で はたらく よてい だ。
rainen, nihon de hataraku yotei da.
I’m scheduled (set) to work in Japan next year.
💡 Tip:
つもり = my intention
予定 = my schedule
So if you’ve already booked something or it’s officially decided, use 予定だ!
