Have you ever been chatting with a friend who’s dealing with a small problem… and you want to give a gentle suggestion?

Maybe they say something like:
“I’ve been so tired from work lately…”
And in English, you might respond:
“Why don’t you take a break?”

Or maybe they say:
“I want to buy a new sweater, but I don’t know which color looks good on me.”
And you might reply:
“How about a red one? I think it would look great with your hair.”

In Japanese, the perfect expression for this type of friendly suggestion is たらどう？ (tara dou).

It means “Why don’t you ~?” or “How about ~?”.
It’s friendly, casual, and super common in everyday conversations. Especially among friends.

ませんか (masen ka) vs ましょう (mashou) vs たらどう (tara dou)
These three expressions all appear when making suggestions, but their nuance is very different.
Let’s compare them so you can choose the right one in conversation!

ませんか (masen ka)：Polite invitation - “Would you like to ~?” / “Won’t you ~?”

This is the softest and most polite way to invite someone.
You’re gently asking for their willingness or opinion.

映画を見ませんか。
えいが を みません か。
eiga wo mimasen ka.
Would you like to watch a movie?

Use this when speaking politely or with someone you’re not close to.

ましょう (mashou)：Proactive suggestion - “Let’s ~!”
Here, you take the lead.
It’s more assertive and includes the speaker, you’re inviting the listener to do something together.

映画を見ましょう。
えいが を みましょう。
eiga wo mimashou.
Let’s watch a movie.

Use this when you’re ready to start or want to motivate everyone.

たらどう (tara dou)：Casual advice or suggestion - “Why don’t you ~?” / “How about ~?”
This is not an invitation you join.
You’re giving advice about what the other person could do.

映画を見たらどう？
えいが を みたら どう？
eiga wo mitara dou?
Won’t you watch a movie? (You watch it, not necessarily me.)

Use it when responding to someone’s problem, hesitation, or indecision.

疲れた顔してるよ。少し休んだらどう？
つかれた かお してる よ。すこし やすんだら どう？
tsukareta kao shiteru yo. sukoshi yasundara dou?
You look tired. How about taking a little rest?

赤い色のセーターにしたらどう？
あかい いろ の せーたー に したら どう？
akai iro no seetaa ni shitara dou?
How about choosing the red sweater?

暑そうですね。上着を脱いだらどうですか？ハンガー、ありますよ。
あつそう です ね。うわぎ を ぬいだら どう です か？ はんがー、あります よ。
atsusou desu ne. uwagi wo nuidara dou desu ka? hangaa, arimasu yo.
You look hot. Why don't you take your jacket off? There's a hanger here.

お腹すいたの？そしたら、コンビニでおにぎりでも買ったらどう？
おなか すいた の？ そしたら、こんびに で おにぎり でも かったら どう？
onaka suita no? soshitara, konbini de onigiri demo kattara dou?
You’re hungry? Then how about grabbing an onigiri at the convenience store?

日本に移住したいんだ！そしたらまずは旅行で滞在してみたらどう？地域によって雰囲気が全然違うよ！
にほん に いじゅう したい ん だ！ そしたら まず は りょこう で たいざい して みたら どう？ ちいき に よって ふんいき が ぜんぜん ちがう よ！
nihon ni ijyuu shitai n da! soshitara mazu wa ryokou de taizai shite mitara dou? chiiki ni yotte fun'iki ga zenzen chigau yo!
You want to move to Japan? Then how about staying here as a traveler first? The atmosphere is totally different depending on the region!

日本語を勉強したいなら、ひかり先生のコースを受けてみたらどうでしょうか？
にほんご をべんきょう したい なら、ひかり せんせい の こーす を うけて みたら どう でしょう か？
nihongo wo benkyou shitai nara, hikari sensei no koosu wo ukete mitara dou deshou ka?
