JLPT N4 - Grammar ๐ ใซใใ nikui
Have you ever felt like something is technically possible…but somehow hard to do?
Maybe the letters are too small to read, the food is awkward to eat.
Or you want to say something but it just feels uncomfortable to say it out loud.
In Japanese, there’s a very useful expression for moments like this.
That expression is ใซใใ (nikui).
It’s used when something is difficult to do, not only physically, but also emotionally or psychologically.
Once you learn ใซใใ, you’ll be able to describe small frustrations and everyday struggles in a very natural Japanese way.
Let’s take a closer look at how ใซใใ works, and when Japanese speakers use it in real life!

ใฅใใ (dzurai) vs ใซใใ (nikui)
These two expressions are very similar. Both ใฅใใ and ใซใใ mean “hard to do”.
But the key difference is why something feels difficult.
ใฅใใ (dzurai)
ใฅใใ is used when the difficulty comes from the speaker’s feelings. ใฅใใ comes from ใคใใ (painful).
The action itself is possible, but doing it feels emotionally painful or uncomfortable.

Use ใฅใใ when the difficulty comes from your heart, not the situation.
ใซใใ (nikui)
ใซใใ is used when an action is difficult because of physical conditions, environment, or objective factors.
This kind of difficulty can be observed from the outside.

Use ใซใใ when something is hard to do in a functional or mechanical sense.
๐ก Tip:
ใซใใ can also be used for emotional situations, similar to ใฅใใ.
In these cases, ใซใใ sounds more neutral, while ใฅใใ sounds more emotional.
