Have you ever been stuck in a long line that just wouldn’t move?
You wait and wait, but… “It’s just not moving!”

In Japanese, we use なかなか〜ない (nakanaka ~ nai) to express this kind of feeling,
when something doesn’t happen easily, or takes longer than expected.

It’s an N4 grammar point that shows frustration, effort, or mild disappointment.
You can use it when you try hard, but things don’t go your way, like waiting for your order, learning kanji, or finding your keys!

It’s a very natural way to express those “it’s just not happening…” moments in Japanese.

Let’s take a closer look at how to use なかなか〜ない and sound more like a native speaker!

ぜんぜん〜ない vs なかなか〜ない
Both can be translated as “not,” but they express very different feelings.

ぜんぜん〜ない expresses complete absence or strong negation.
It’s factual and direct, simply “not at all.”

ぜんぜん分からない。
ぜんぜん わからない。
zenzen wakaranai.
I don’t understand at all.

なかなか〜ない implies effort or expectation that something should happen,
but it’s taking time or not happening easily.

なかなか分からない。
なかなか わからない。
nakanaka wakaranai.
It’s hard to understand. 

💡 Tip:
Think of ぜんぜん〜ない as a simple fact,
while なかなか〜ない adds emotion, a little sigh of frustration or patience.

行列がなかなか進まない。
ぎょうれつ が なかなか すすまない。
gyouretsu ga nakanaka susumanai.
The line isn’t moving at all.

風邪がなかなか治らない。
かぜ が なかなか なおらない。
kaze ga nakanaka naoranai.
My cold just won’t go away.

メールの返事がなかなかこない。
めーる の へんじ が なかなか こない。
meeru no henji ga nakanaka konai.
The reply to my email just won’t come.

給料がなかなか上がらない。
きゅうりょう が なかなか あがらない。
kyuuryou ga nakanaka agaranai.
My salary just won’t increase.

友達と遊びたいのに、なかなか予定が合わない。
ともだち と あそびたい のに、なかなか よてい が あわない。
tomodachi to asobitai noni, nakanaka yotei ga awanai.
I want to hang out with my friends, but our schedules never match.
