That “one at a time” or “little by little” feeling is exactly where today’s grammar shines!

Today we’re learning ずつ (zutsu). It’s a super useful N3 expression that means “each,” “apiece,” “at a time,” or “little by little.”

It’s perfect for talking about equal amounts, sharing things fairly, or describing gradual progress, like improving your Japanese step by step.
Whether you’re breaking tasks into small pieces or giving instructions to a group, ずつ helps you express that smooth, steady, one-by-one rhythm.

おきに (oki ni) vs ずつ (zutsu)
Both expressions involve repetition, but the "space" they describe is different!

おきに (oki ni)
おきに focuses on the interval or the gap between events. It means "at intervals of" or "every other."

2日おきに 働きます。
ふつか おきに はたらきます。
futsuka oki ni hatarakimasu.
I work every two days (If work Monday, then a 2-day gap, then work again on Thursday).

ずつ (zutsu)
ずつ focuses on a fixed amount being repeated or distributed equally.

パンを2個ずつ 袋に入れます。
ぱん を にこ ずつ ふくろ に いれます。
pan wo niko zutsu fukuro ni iremasu.
I put two pieces of bread at a time into the bags (every bag gets exactly two).

毎日、日本語の単語を5個ずつ覚えるようにしています。
まいにち、 にほんご の たんご を ごこ ずつ おぼえる ように しています。
mainichi, nihongo no tango wo goko zutsu oboeru youni shiteimasu.
I try to memorize five Japanese words each day.

クッキーを一人に3枚ずつ配ってください。
くっきー を ひとり に さんまい ずつ くばって ください。
kukki- wo hitori ni sanmai zutsu kubatte kudasai.
Please give three cookies to each person.

兄弟3人で5,000円ずつ出し合って、両親にプレゼントを買いました。
きょうだい さんにん で ごせんえん ずつ だしあって、 りょうしん に ぷれぜんと を かいました。
kyoudai sannin de gosenen zutsu dashiatte, ryoushin ni purezento wo kaimashita.
The three of us siblings each chipped in 5,000 yen and bought a present for our parents.

この薬は、毎食後、1錠ずつ飲んでください。
この くすり は、 まいしょくご、 いちじょう ずつ のんで ください。
kono kusuri ha, maishokugo, ichijou zutsu nonde kudasai.
Please take one pill at a time after every meal.

日本の生活に少しずつ慣れてきました。
にほん の せいかつ に すこし ずつ なれて きました。
nihon no seikatsu ni sukoshi zutsu narete kimashita.
I have gradually become used to life in Japan bit by bit.

ガソリンが値上がりしているので、10リットルずつ給油している。
がそりん が ねあがり している の で、 じゅうりっとる ずつ きゅうゆ している。
gasorin ga neagari shiteiru no de, juurittoru zutsu kyuuyu shiteiru.
Since gas prices are rising, I am filling up 10 liters at a time.
