That feeling of “Wait, what?” or “I didn’t see that coming!” is exactly what ところが(tokoro ga) captures.

ところが is a conjunction often translated as “however” or “even so,” but it always carries a sense of surprise or an unexpected result.

While words like “but” or “however” are common, ところが is your best friend when your expectations are completely overturned. It is like the plot twist button of the Japanese language.

しかし (shikashi) / でも (demo) vs ところが (tokoro ga)
All of these words can mean “but” or “however,” but the feeling and nuance are very different.

しかし / でも (shikashi / demo)
These are used for logical contrasts or neutral contradictions.
They simply state a fact.

10時に待ち合わせをしました。しかし、彼は来ませんでした。
10じ に まちあわせ を しました。しかし、かれ は きませんでした。
juuji ni machiawase wo shimashita. shikashi, kare ha kimasendeshita.
I had an appointment at 10:00. However, he did not come.

ところが (tokoro ga)
ところが adds a strong feeling of surprise or unmet expectations.
It implies that you expected the opposite result.

10時に待ち合わせをしました。ところが、彼は来ませんでした。
10じ に まちあわせ を しました。ところが、かれ は きませんでした。
juuji ni machiawase wo shimashita. tokoro ga, kare ha kimasendeshita.
I had an appointment at 10:00. But to my surprise, he did not come.

天気予報は晴れでした。ところが、雨が降ってきました。
てんきよほう は はれ でした。ところが、あめ が ふってきました。
tenkiyohou ha hare deshita. tokoro ga, ame ga futtekimashita.
The weather forecast said it would be sunny. However, it started raining.

この映画は評判がいい。ところが、実際に見てみるとつまらなかった。
この えいが は ひょうばん が いい。ところが、じっさい に みてみる と つまらなかった。
kono eiga ha hyouban ga ii. tokoro ga, jissai ni mitemiru to tsumaranakatta.
This movie has a good reputation. However, when I actually watched it, it was boring.

絶対に勝てると思っていた。ところが、最後の最後で逆転されてしまった。
ぜったい に かてる と おもって いた。ところが、さいご の さいご で ぎゃくてん されて しまった。
zettai ni kateru to omotte ita. tokoro ga, saigo no saigo de gyakuten sarete shimatta.
I was sure we would win. However, we were turned around at the very last moment.

難しい試験だったので諦めていた。ところが、結果は合格だった。
むずかしい しけん だった ので あきらめて いた。ところが、けっか は ごうかく だった。
muzukashii shiken datta node akiramete ita. tokoro ga, kekka ha goukaku datta.
It was a difficult exam, so I had given up. However, the result was a pass.

その場しのぎで100円ショップの時計を買った。ところが、10年経ってもまだ壊れていない。
そのば しのぎ で ひゃくえん しょっぷ の とけい を かった。ところが、じゅうねん たって も まだ こわれて いない。
sonoba shinogi de hyakuen shoppu no tokei wo katta. tokoro ga, juunen tatte mo mada kowarete inai.
I bought a cheap clock just to get by. However, even after ten years, it still has not broken.

彼は口数が少なくて怖そうだった。ところが、話してみるととても優しくて面白い人だった。
かれ は くちかず が すくなくて こわそう だった。ところが、はなして みる と とても やさしくて おもしろい ひと だった。
kare ha kuchikazu ga sukunakute kowasou datta. tokoro ga, hanashite miru to totemo yasashikute omoshiroi hito datta.
He did not talk much and seemed scary. However, when I talked to him, he was very kind and funny.
