Life is full of “even if” moments, right?

Even if it rains, we still go out.
Even if you fail once, you can try again.
Even if it takes a lot of time and money, I want to study abroad in Japan.

In Japanese, the phrase for this is たとえ〜ても (tatoe ~ temo).
It’s an N3 grammar point that lets you express resilience, determination, or just plain reality, things still happen even if something else is true.

The cool thing is, it’s not just about facts, it’s also a great way to show your strong feelings and make your words more engaging and persuasive.

〜ても without たとえ

たとえ雨が降っても行きます。（たとえ あめ が ふっても いきます/ tatoe ame ga futtemo ikimasu.)
雨が降っても行きます。（あめ が ふっても いきます/ ame ga futtemo ikimasu.)

Both mean “Even if it rains, I’ll go.”
Adding たとえ makes the sentence stronger and more dramatic.

もし〜ても
Another option for “even if,” but softer and less emphatic than たとえ〜ても.

たとえ〜ても adds emotion and impact. It’s often used in speeches, songs, or motivational quotes when you want to emphasize strong feelings.

たとえ子どもでも、これは許されるべきことではない。

絶対に日本語を上達させて友達を作りたい。だからたとえどんなに仕事が忙しくても、毎日5分は絶対に勉強する。
ぜったい に にほんご を じょうたつ させて ともだち を つくりたい。だから たとえ どんなに しごと が いそがしくても、まいにち ごふん は ぜったい に べんきょう する。
zettai ni nihongo wo joutatsu sasete tomodachi wo tsukuritai. dakara tatoe donna ni shigoto ga isogashikutemo, mainichi gofun ha zettai ni benkyou suru.
I want to improve my Japanese and make friends. That’s why, no matter how busy work gets, I’ll study at least 5 minutes every day.

たとえ体が元気でも、いまは無理しない方がいいよ。気持ち的にも大変だったでしょう？
たとえ からだ が げんき でも、いま は むり しない ほう が いい よ。きもち てき に も たいへん だった でしょう？
tatoe karada ga genki demo, ima ha muri shinai hou ga ii yo. kimochi teki ni mo taihen datta deshou?
Even if your body feels fine, you shouldn’t push yourself now. It must have been tough emotionally too, right?

たとえ親切でも、よく知らない人を信用しすぎないほうがいいよ。
たとえ しんせつ でも、よく しらない ひと を しんよう しすぎない ほう が いい よ。
tatoe shinsetsu demo, yoku shiranai hito wo shinyou shisuginai hou ga ii yo.
Even if someone seems kind, you shouldn’t trust a stranger too much.
