JLPT N3 - Grammar - なぜなら nazenara

Japanese grammar point なぜなら with romaji nazenara and JLPT grammar level label

Have you ever been asked, “Why do you like Japan so much?”
And you wanted to give a clear reason, something like:

“Because the food is delicious!” 🍣
“Because I like their culture!” 🎎
“Because the people are kind!” 🌸

In Japanese, when you want to clearly give the reason, you can use なぜなら (nazenara).
It’s like saying “the reason is because…” in English.

It’s perfect when you want your explanation to feel strong and clear.
Plus, by adding reasons, you can make your conversations longer and go a little deeper.

Let’s dive in and see how to use it!

から (kara)

→ very common, used in everyday conversation.

今日は行きません。つかれているからです。
(Kyou ha ikimasen. Tsukarete iru kara desu.)
I won’t go today, because I’m tired.

ので (node)

also means “because,” but sounds a little softer and more polite than から.

雨なので、外出しません。
(Ame na node, gaishutsu shimasen.
Because it’s raining, I won’t go out.

ため (tame)

→ more formal, often used in writing or formal speech.

工事のため、この道は通行止めです。
(Kouji no tame, kono michi ha tsuukoudome desu.
Because of construction, this road is closed.

💡 Tips:

  • なぜなら = emphasizes the reason clearly, often followed by からです.
  • から = casual, natural for daily talk.
  • ので = polite, softer tone.
  • ため = formal, used in announcements, signs, or official writing.

なぜなら often appears together with から or ため at the end of the sentence that gives the reason.
[ Statement ]。なぜなら [ Reason / Explanation ] からです。
