In Japanese, we have the word もし (moshi) for “if.”
But when you want to add drama, emotion, or imagine something very unlikely to happen, you use its stronger version: もしも～たら (moshimo ~ tara).

You’ll often hear もしも in Japanese song lyrics, because it carries strong feelings.
It’s the Japanese version of “What if… just imagine this.”

Whether you’re dreaming of winning the lottery or worrying about an extreme situation, もしも～たら helps make your Japanese sound more emotional and expressive.

場合は (ばあいは / baai ha) vs もしも (moshimo)
Both can mean “if” or “in case of,” but the nuance is very different.

場合は (ばあいは / baai ha)
場合は is formal and practical.
It is used for realistic situations, rules, and procedures, often in manuals or announcements.

地震が起きた場合は、机の下に隠れてください。
じしん が おきた ばあい は、つくえ の した に かくれて ください。
jishin ga okita baai ha, tsukue no shita ni kakurete kudasai.
In the event of an earthquake, please hide under the table.

もしも (moshimo)
もしも is emotional and imaginative.
It highlights the speaker’s feelings and is often used for unlikely or dramatic situations.

もしもいま、地震が起きたら、どうしよう！
もしも いま、じしん が おきたら、どうしよう！
moshimo ima, jishin ga okitara, doushiyou!
What if an earthquake happened right now? What should I do?

もし (moshi) vs もしも (moshimo)
The difference is the strength of imagination.

もし (moshi)
もし is the standard “if” for realistic, everyday situations.

もし明日雨が降ったら、家で本を読みます。
もし あした あめ が ふったら、いえ で ほん を よみます。
moshi ashita ame ga futtara, ie de hon wo yomimasu.
If it rains tomorrow, I’ll read a book at home.

もしも (moshimo)
もしも adds drama, longing, or a sense of “this probably won’t happen.”

もしも明日雨が降ったら、イベントは台無しだよ！
もしも あした あめ が ふったら、いべんと は だいなし だ よ！
moshimo ashita ame ga futtara, ibento wa dainashi da yo!
What if it rains tomorrow? The event will be totally ruined!

もしも魔法が使えたら、何をしますか？
もしも まほう が つかえたら、なに を します か？
moshimo mahou ga tsukaetara, nani wo shimasu ka?
If you could use magic, what would you do?

もしも生まれ変わったら、また自分で生まれたい。
もしも うまれかわったら、また じぶん で うまれたい。
moshimo umarekawattara, mata jibun de umaretai.
If I were reborn, I would want to be born as myself again.

もしも二人が出会わなかったら、こんな悲しい結末にならなかったのかな。
もしも ふたり が であわなかったら、こんな かなしい けつまつ に ならなかった の かな。
moshimo futari ga deawanakattara, konna kanashii ketsumatsu ni naranakatta no kana.
If the two of them had never met, maybe it wouldn’t have ended so sadly.

もしもその映画がおもしろくなかったら、途中で帰ってもいいですか？
もしも その えいが が おもしろく なかったら、とちゅう で かえって も いい です か？
moshimo sono eiga ga omoshiroku nakattara, tochuu de kaette mo ii desu ka?
If that movie isn’t interesting, is it okay to leave halfway through?

もしも彼女が作ってくれた料理が下手だったら、どうする？
もしも かのじょ が つくって くれた りょうり が へた だったら、どうする？
moshimo kanojo ga tsukutte kureta ryouri ga heta dattara, dou suru?
If the food she made wasn’t very good, what would you do?

もしも私が鳥だったら、今すぐあなたのところに会いに行くのに。
もしも わたし が とり だったら、いま すぐ あなた の ところ に あい に いく の に。
moshimo watashi ga tori dattara, ima sugu anata no tokoro ni ai ni iku noni.
If I were a bird, I’d fly to see you right now.

もしもこれが夢だったら、どんなにいいだろう。
もしも これ が ゆめ だったら、どんなに いい だろう。
moshimo kore ga yume dattara, donnani ii darou.
If this were just a dream, how wonderful that would be.
