JLPT N3 - Grammar 🌟 中 chuu/juu

Japanese suffix “〜中” (ちゅう / じゅう – chuu / juu) labeled N3 on an orange background, used to mean “during,” “in the middle of,” or “throughout.”

Have you ever seen the little kanji 中 in Japanese and thought…
“Wait, how do I read this? chuu? juu? And why does it mean different things depending on the situation?”

Maybe you’re checking a restaurant’s door and see a sign that says “〜中”…
and you wonder, “Does this mean they’re currently doing something? Are they busy? Closed? In the middle of something?”

Or you hear someone say something happened “all day long” or “throughout the week,”
and suddenly 中 shows up again, but with a different reading and a different meaning!

In Japanese, 中(ちゅう) and 中(じゅう) are incredibly useful expressions that show

something is currently in progress,
something is in the middle of a time period, or
something happens throughout an entire time span.

Same kanji, different readings, different nuance, and once you understand the pattern, it becomes surprisingly easy and fun to use!

Ready to learn how to use both ちゅう and じゅう naturally?
Let’s dive in!

The kanji 中 can be read as ちゅう (chuu) or じゅう (juu), and the meaning changes depending on the reading.
Both share the idea of “inside / within,” but how they express time and action is very different.

(ちゅう) chuu
Refers to something that is currently in progress, or a situation that is in the middle of happening right now.
It’s used for actions, states, or temporary conditions.

仕事なので、あとで電話します。
しごとちゅう なので、 あと で でんわ します。
shigotochuu na no de, ato de denwa shimasu.
I’ll call you later because I’m working right now.

Use ちゅう when something is actively happening at the moment or when referring to a point within a larger period (like 午前中 gozen chuu, AM).

中(じゅう) juu
Expresses the idea of “throughout”, “all the way through”, or “across the whole range.”
It applies to entire time spans or entire areas.

一日 雨が 降っていた。
いちにちじゅう あめ が ふっていた。
ichinichijuu ame ga futteita.
It rained all day long.

Use じゅう when something continues over the entire duration or covers all parts of a space.

💡 Quick Tip
ちゅう = “in the middle of / currently happening” (focus on a moment)
じゅう = “throughout the whole period or space” (focus on the entire span)
