JLPT N2 - Grammar 🌟 次第で shidai de
Have you ever felt like your plans were totally up in the air?
Maybe you're waiting for the weather to clear up before deciding on a picnic.
Or perhaps your success on an exam depends entirely on how much you study tonight.
In Japanese, when you want to say “depending on” or “it all depends on”, there’s a very elegant and useful expression: 次第で (しだいで / shidai de).
This N2-level grammar point is used to show that one condition or factor directly determines the final outcome.
It’s perfect for talking about results, decisions, and situations that could change for better or worse.
Let’s take a closer look at how 次第で works!

Choosing Between 次第で (shidai de) and 次第だ (shidai da)
次第で (shidai de) is used mid-sentence to connect a condition and its result.
予算次第で、旅行先を決めます。
よさんしだいで、りょこうさきをきめます。
yosan shidai de, ryokou saki wo kimemasu.
We’ll decide the destination depending on the budget.
次第だ (shidai da) is used at the end of a sentence to clearly state that something depends on a factor.
この仕事が成功するかどうかは、君の努力次第だ。
このしごとがせいこうするかどうかは、きみのどりょくしだいだ。
kono shigoto ga seikou suruka douka ha, kimi no doryoku shidai da.
Whether this job succeeds or not depends on your effort.
💡 Tips:
次第で (shidai de) - Depending on (connector)
次第だ (shidai da) - It depends on (conclusion)
によって (ni yotte) vs 次第で (shidai de)
Both expressions can mean “depending on”, but their nuance is different.
によって (ni yotte)
によって is a broad and neutral expression meaning “depending on”.
It’s used to talk about differences, causes, methods, or general conditions.
It does not strongly focus on the result - it simply explains variation.
国によって、習慣が違います。
くに に よって、しゅうかん が ちがいます。
kuni ni yotte, shuukan ga chigaimasu.
Customs differ depending on the country.
Use によって when you want to explain differences or general conditions in an objective way.
次第で (shidai de)
次第で emphasizes that the outcome or result is determined by one specific factor.
It often implies that things could turn out very differently depending on that condition.
やる気次第で、結果は変わります。
やるき しだい で、けっか は かわります。
yaruki shidai de, kekka ha kawarimasu.
Depending on your motivation, the result will change.
