JLPT N2 - Grammar ๐ŸŒŸ ใ›ใ‚ใฆ sememte

Japanese adverb โ€œใ›ใ‚ใฆโ€ (semete) labeled N2 on a pink background, meaning โ€œat leastโ€ or โ€œat the very least.โ€

Have you ever had a wish that felt just a little desperate?

Like when you’re on a diet and have been resisting your favorite chocolate for weeks… but then someone brings you a slice of cake as a gift. You think, “I know I shouldn’t eat this… all my effort will go to waste… but… but… at least one bite…”

Or imagine being invited to a reception party for a new product by a valued business partner. Unfortunately, you can’t attend because of another commitment, so you say “Well then, at least let me send some flowers.”

In Japanese, the word for this feeling is ใ›ใ‚ใฆ (semete).
It’s an N2 expression that means “at least”, but it’s not just neutral. It carries a nuance of minimum hope, dissatisfaction, or compromise.

Think of it like saying: “I can’t get everything I want, but I need at least this much.”

Let’s dive into ใ›ใ‚ใฆ together!
