In Japanese, these “I tried so hard!” or “This moment is special!” feelings are expressed with せっかく (sekkaku).

It’s such a handy word because it captures two vibes:
when your effort sadly didn’t pay off
when you want to make the most of a rare or special opportunity

せっかく is all about recognizing that something took time, care, or intention. And that’s what makes the result meaningful, surprising, or even a little disappointing.

わざわざ (waza waza) vs せっかく (sekkaku)
Both expressions involve special effort, but the nuance and emotional tone are different.

わざわざ (waza waza)

わざわざ is used when someone goes out of their way to do something.
It highlights intentional extra effort and is often used to express gratitude or polite surprise.

わざわざ来てくれてありがとう！
わざわざ きて くれて ありがとう！
wazawaza kite kurete arigatou!
Thank you for coming all the way here just for me.

The focus is on the person’s effort, “You didn’t have to, but you did.”

せっかく(sekkaku)

せっかく expresses a special opportunity, effort, or rare chance, and the result can feel either positive or negative. It often carries feelings of appreciation, disappointment, or a desire not to waste the opportunity.

せっかく作ったのに、誰も食べてくれなかった。
せっかく つくった のに、だれ も たべて くれなかった。
sekkaku tsukutta noni, dare mo tabete kurenakatta.
I went to all the trouble of cooking, but nobody ate it.

The effort was wasted, expressing regret.

せっかく来てくれたんだから、ゆっくりしていってね。
せっかく きて くれた ん だから、ゆっくり して いって ね。
sekkaku kite kureta n dakara, yukkuri shite itte ne.
Since you came all the way here, please relax and stay for a while.

せっかくの機会なので、楽しんでください。

tomodachi ga sekkaku kite kureta noni, watashi ha isogashikute hanasenakatta.
My friend came all the way to see me, but I was too busy to talk.

せっかく早起きしたので、朝ご飯をゆっくり食べたい。
せっかく はやおき した ので、あさごはん を ゆっくり たべたい。
sekkaku hayaoki shita node, asagohan wo yukkuri tabetai.
Since I woke up early, I want to enjoy breakfast slowly.

せっかく日本に来たので、色々な食べ物を試したいです。
せっかく にほん に きた ので、いろいろ な たべもの を ためしたい です。
sekkaku nihon ni kita node, iroiro na tabemono wo tameshitai desu.
Since I came all the way to Japan, I want to try many different foods.

せっかくの休みなのに、雨で外に出られない。
せっかく の やすみ なのに、あめ で そと に でられない。
sekkaku no yasumi nanoni, ame de soto ni derarenai.
It’s my precious day off, but I can’t go outside because of the rain.

難しそうだけど、せっかくのチャンスだから挑戦してみます。
むずかしそう だけど、せっかく の ちゃんす だから、ちょうせん して みます。
muzukashisou dakedo, sekkaku no chansu dakara, chousen shite mimasu.
