JLPT N2 - Grammar ๐ ใใใฃใฆ kaette
Have you ever tried to do something with the best intentions…only to realize it backfired in the most unexpected way?
Maybe you gave someone advice because you genuinely wanted to help, but instead of appreciating it, they looked upset and the mood got weird…
Or you acted out of kindness, thinking, “This will definitely make things better!” but the opposite happened, and you immediately regretted it.
Or how about the time you tried to organize your room, but somehow it ended up messier than before?
These “Oh no… that’s not what I meant to happen!” moments… we’ve all been there, right?
In Japanese, we use ใใใฃใฆ (kaette) to describe exactly this feeling, when the result is the opposite of what you expected. It means “on the contrary,” “rather,” “instead,” or “surprisingly.”
If something was supposed to help but made things worse, or if a situation unexpectedly flipped directions, ใใใฃใฆ is the perfect expression to capture that ironic twist.
Ready to master this super natural N2 expression?
Let’s dive in!

้ใซ (ใใใใซ / gyaku ni) vs ใใใฃใฆ (kaette)
Both ้ใซ and ใใใฃใฆ can mean “on the contrary,” but the nuance is quite different.
้ใซ (ใใใใซ / gyaku ni)
้ใซ is used for a logical contrast or switching perspective.
It doesn’t necessarily involve surprise. It simply highlights a different angle or the opposite situation.

On the contrary, sometimes saying nothing is the kinder option.
This is just explaining a different viewpoint, no unexpected or negative outcome.
ใใใฃใฆ (kaette)
ใใใฃใฆ expresses a result that is opposite from what was expected, often with a nuance of surprise, irony, or even backfiring.
