Have you ever had something happen all of a sudden, with no warning at all?
Like when your friend calls you at midnight, or your boss suddenly changes the deadline, or your cat jumps on your keyboard while you’re typing!

In Japanese, the word for this is いきなり (ikinari).

It means “suddenly, abruptly, without warning”, and it’s used when something happens out of nowhere, often catching you by surprise.

People who know Japanese restaurants might also be familiar with “いきなり！ステーキ(Ikinari! Steak)”, a steakhouse in Japan.
The concept is that instead of appetizers or salads first, you get to taste steak immediately, right away, on an empty stomach, so you can really feel just how delicious it is. That’s the いきなり spirit!

So whether it’s an unexpected phone call, a sudden rain shower, or a steak landing on your table without warning, いきなり is the word to use.

いきなり + ですが/だけど + [Sentence]
“This is sudden, but ~”. Often used at the start of a conversation or suggestion in casual speech.

いきなりですが、このあと海、見に行きませんか？
いきなり だけど、この あと うみ、みに いきませんか？
ikinari dakedo, kono ato umi, mi ni iki masen ka?
This is sudden, but do you want to go see the ocean after this?

突然 (totsuzen)
More formal. Often used in writing, news, or formal speech.

突然の雨で、試合は中止になった。
とつぜん の あめ で、しあい は ちゅうし に なった。
totsuzen no ame de, shiai ha chuushi ni natta.
Due to a sudden rain, the game was canceled.

急に (kyuu ni)
Neutral, used in both writing and conversation. Emphasizes that something happens quickly or abruptly.

急に立ち上がったので、めまいがした。
きゅう に たちあがった ので、めまい が した。
kyuu ni tachiagatta node, memai ga shita.
I stood up suddenly, so I felt dizzy.

💡 Tip:
突然 = formal, written, announcements
急に = neutral, quick change, both spoken/written
いきなり = casual, spoken, often with a “whoa, out of nowhere!” feeling

さっきまであんなに晴れていたのに、いきなり雨が降ってきた。
さっきまで あんなに はれていた のに、いきなり あめ が ふってきた。
sakki made annani hareteita noni, ikinari ame ga futte kita.
It had been so sunny just a moment ago, but suddenly it started to rain.

ドアを開けたら、いきなり虫が顔に飛んできた。
どあ を あけたら、いきなり むし が かお に とんできた。
doa wo aketara, ikinari mushi ga kao ni tonde kita.
When I opened the door, a bug suddenly flew into my face.

知らない人にいきなり怒鳴られて、とても怖い思いをした。
しらない ひと に いきなり どなられて、とても こわい おもい を した。
shiranai hito ni ikinari donararete, totemo kowai omoi wo shita.
A stranger suddenly yelled at me, and I felt really scared.

授業中にいきなり先生に質問されたので びっくりした。
じゅぎょうちゅう に、いきなり せんせい に しつもん された ので びっくり した。
jugyouchuu ni, ikinari sensei ni shitsumon sareta node bikkuri shita.
During class, the teacher suddenly asked me a question, so I was surprised.

しばらく連絡を取っていなかった友達が、いきなり結婚を報告してきた。
しばらく れんらく を とっていなかった ともだち が、いきなり けっこん を ほうこく してきた。
shibaraku renraku wo totte inakatta tomodachi ga, ikinari kekkon wo houkoku shite kita.
A friend I hadn’t been in touch with for a while suddenly announced their marriage.

いきなりだけど、明日ふたりだけで会えないかな？
いきなり だけど、あした ふたり だけ で あえない かな？
ikinari dakedo, ashita futari dake de aenai kana?
This is sudden, but would you like to meet just the two of us tomorrow?
