JLPT N2 - Grammar ๐ ๅใณ futatabi
Have you ever wanted to say “once again” or “for the second time” in Japanese?
Imagine this: you’re on a trip to Japan. The journey has been amazing, so many places visited, so many delicious foods tried.
Yet, there are still more spots you want to explore and more flavors you want to taste. But… it’s already the last day of your trip. At the airport, with your suitcase in hand, you tell yourself:
“I will come back here again!”
In Japanese, the word for this feeling is ๅใณ๏ผใตใใใณ futatabi๏ผ.
It’s an N2 word that means “again, once more.”
It’s a little more formal than ใพใ (mata), and you’ll often hear it in news reports, books, or speeches. Because it has a slightly dramatic ring, it also shows up in J-pop lyrics and in the prologues or epilogues of anime and movies.
Let’s explore ๅใณ together!

ใพใ vs. ๅใณ
ใพใ : casual, used in everyday conversation.
ๅใณ : more formal, often used in writing, speeches, or news.

ใใไธๅบฆ (mou ichido) vs. ๅใณ
ใใไธๅบฆ : “one more time,” focuses on repeating an action.
ๅใณ : broader, can describe repeating an action or a whole situation.
