Have you ever wanted to say “once again” or “for the second time” in Japanese?

Imagine this: you’re on a trip to Japan. The journey has been amazing, so many places visited, so many delicious foods tried.
Yet, there are still more spots you want to explore and more flavors you want to taste. But… it’s already the last day of your trip. At the airport, with your suitcase in hand, you tell yourself:
“I will come back here again!”

In Japanese, the word for this feeling is 再び（ふたたび futatabi）.
It’s an N2 word that means “again, once more.”

It’s a little more formal than また (mata), and you’ll often hear it in news reports, books, or speeches. Because it has a slightly dramatic ring, it also shows up in J-pop lyrics and in the prologues or epilogues of anime and movies.

また vs. 再び
また : casual, used in everyday conversation.
再び : more formal, often used in writing, speeches, or news.

日本にまた行きたい。
また にほん に いきたい。
nihon ni mata ikitai.
I want to go to Japan again. (casual)

日本に再び行きたい。
ふたたび にほん に いきたい。
nihon ni futatabi ikitai.
I want to go to Japan once more. (formal/dramatic)

💡Tip:
Use また with friends, and 再び when you want to sound more formal, literary, or dramatic.

もう一度 (mou ichido) vs. 再び
もう一度 : “one more time,” focuses on repeating an action.
再び : broader, can describe repeating an action or a whole situation.

もう一度説明してください。
もう いちど せつめい して ください。
mou ichido setsumei shite kudasai.
Please explain it one more time. (practical request)

💡Tip:
Think of もう一度 as “do-over” and 再び as “once more” with a formal or dramatic nuance.

チャンスが再びやってきた。
ちゃんす が ふたたび やって きた。
chansu ga futatabi yatte kita.
The chance has come again.

不安が再び胸をよぎった。
ふあん が ふたたび むね を よぎった。
fuan ga futatabi mune wo yogitta.
Anxiety passed through my heart once again.

人々がその名前を再び口にすることはなかった。
ひとびと が その なまえ を ふたたび くち に する こと は なかった。
hitobito ga sono namae wo futatabi kuchi ni suru koto ha nakatta.
People never spoke that name again.

今回は失敗しましたが、再び挑戦するつもりです。
こんかい は しっぱい しました が、ふたたび ちょうせん する つもり です。
konkai ha shippai shimashita ga, futatabi chousen suru tsumori desu.
I failed this time, but I will try again.

最新医療と家族の看病のおかげで、再び健康を取り戻すことができた。
さいしん いりょう と かぞく の かんびょう の おかげ で、ふたたび けんこう を とりもどす こと が できた。
saishin iryou to kazoku no kanbyou no okage de, futatabi kenkou wo torimodosu koto ga dekita.

かれ と の ふたたび の であい は うんめい だ と おもいました。
