Today’s expression is だけあって (dake atte), an N2 grammar point used when something matches your expectations because of a certain reason, background, effort, or ability.

It’s perfect for giving compliments, expressing admiration, and sounding mature, natural, and very Japanese.

Both だけに and だけあって highlight a reason or background, but they’re used differently.　

だけに (dake ni)

だけに is used when a strong reason or background leads naturally to a result, and that result can be positive or negative.
It often carries empathy, disappointment, or emotional depth.

このプロジェクトに全てを注いでいただけに、失敗した時のショックも大きかった。
この ぷろじぇくと に すべて を そそいで いた だけ に、しっぱい した とき の しょっく も おおきかった。
kono purojekuto ni subete wo sosoide ita dake ni, shippai shita toki no shokku mo ookikatta.
Because I had poured everything into this project, the shock when I failed was even bigger.

だけあって (dake atte)
だけあって is used when the result matches expectations in a positive or praiseworthy way.
It conveys admiration, respect, or “as expected from…”

彼はプロの料理人だけあって、味付けが本当にすばらしい。
かれ は ぷろ の りょうりにん だけ あって、あじつけ が ほんとう に すばらしい。
kare ha puro no ryourinin dake atte, ajitsuke ga hontou ni subarashii.
As expected from a professional chef, his seasoning is truly outstanding.

彼は日本に留学していただけあって、日本語でのプレゼンも完璧だ。
かれ は にほん に りゅうがく して いた だけ あって、にほんご で の ぷれぜん も かんぺき だ。
kare ha nihon ni ryuugaku shite ita dake atte, nihongo de no purezen mo kanpeki da.
Since he studied abroad in Japan, his presentation in Japanese is perfect.

彼女は子育て経験者だけあって、手際が驚くほど良かった。
かのじょ は こそだて けいけんしゃ だけ あって、てぎわ が おどろく ほど よかった。
kanojo ha kosodate keikensha dake atte, tegiwa ga odoroku hodo yokatta.
As expected from someone with parenting experience, she was amazingly efficient.

彼はミュージシャンの息子だけあって、音楽センスが抜群だ。
かれ は みゅーじしゃん の むすこ だけ あって、おんがく せんす が ばつぐん だ。
kare ha myuujishan no musuko dake atte, ongaku sensu ga batsugun da.
Being the son of a musician, he has outstanding musical sense.

この店は評判がいいだけあって、いつもお客さんが多い。
この みせ は ひょうばん が いい だけ あって、いつも おきゃくさん が おおい。
kono mise ha hyouban ga ii dake atte, itsumo okyakusan ga ooi.
Since this shop has a great reputation, it’s always crowded with customers.

この炊飯器は高価なだけあって、作りがしっかりしていて高機能だ。
この すいはんき は こうかな だけ あって、つくり が しっかり して いて こうきのう だ。
kono suihanki ha kouna na dake atte, tsukuri ga shikkari shite ite koukinou da.
Since this rice cooker is expensive, it’s well built and has excellent features.
