Have you ever encountered a situation so ridiculous, so rude, or so over-the-top that you just stood there thinking, “Are you actually kidding me right now?!”

Maybe a friend showed up two hours late without calling, or someone made a "joke" that was just way too mean to be funny. In English, we might say, "There’s a limit!" or "You’ve gone too far!"

In Japanese, when someone’s behavior or a situation completely leaps over the line of common sense, we use にもほどがある (nimo hodo ga aru).

This expression is your go-to phrase for expressing disbelief, annoyance, or a firm "enough is enough!". It literally means "there is a limit even to (that)," implying that the person has zoomed right past it.

すぎる (sugiru) vs にもほどがある (nimo hodo ga aru)
Both expressions describe something that exceeds a normal level, but the speaker’s attitude and emotional involvement are very different.

すぎる (sugiru)
This is a neutral expression. It simply states that something is "too much" or "excessive," and can be used for both good and bad situations.

このケーキは甘すぎる。
この けーき は あますぎる。
kono keeki ha amasugiru.
This cake is too sweet.

にもほどがある (nimo hodo ga aru)
にもほどがある emphasizes the speaker's disbelief, anger, or frustration. It implies that the situation has crossed a line that should not be crossed. Unlike "sugiru," it is traditionally used only for negative situations.

わがままを言うにもほどがある！
わがまま を いう にも ほど が ある！
wagamama wo iu nimo hodo ga aru!
There is a limit to being selfish! (You’ve gone way too far!)

A Little Note on Etiquette
にもほどがある is quite emotional and often sounds like a final warning or a "last straw" statement. Since it carries a scolding tone, it's best to avoid using it toward your superiors, teachers, or customers. It might sound a bit too aggressive!

However, you can use it toward yourself! It’s a great way to use self-deprecating humor when you’ve done something incredibly silly.

昨日飲みすぎて財布をなくすなんて、ばかにもほどがある、自分…。
きのう のみすぎて さいふ を なくす なんて、ばか にも ほど が ある、じぶん…。
kinou nomisugite saifu wo nakusu nante, baka nimo hodo ga aru, jibun...
Drinking too much and losing my wallet yesterday... there is a limit to my own stupidity... (I can’t believe I did that!)

Using it Positively?
In modern slang (especially on the internet), people use it to describe something "dangerously cute" or "excessively beautiful." It’s like saying, "This is so cute it should be illegal!"
It might not appear on your JLPT exam, but you'll see it a lot on social media, so it's a fun one to remember!

あのもふもふの犬...可愛いにもほどがある！
あの もふもふ の いぬ...かわいい にも ほど が ある！
ano mofumofu no inu... kawaii nimo hodo ga aru!
That fluffy dog... is just way too cute! (I can't handle it!)

今の発言は、冗談にもほどがあります。
いま の はつげん は、じょうだん にも ほど が あります。
ima no hatsugen ha, joudan nimo hodo ga arimasu.
That comment just now went way too far for a joke.

勝手に人の靴を隠すなんて、いくらなんでもいたずらにもほどがある。
かって に ひと の くつ を かくす なんて、いくら なんでも いたずら にも ほど が ある。
katte ni hito no kutsu wo kakusu nante, ikura nandemo itazura nimo hodo ga aru.
Hiding someone's shoes without permission... no matter how you look at it, that's going too far for a prank.

コーラ1杯に3,000円も取るなんて...ホテルのバーでもぼったくりにもほどがある。
こーら いっぱい に さんぜんえん も とる なんて...ほてる の ばー でも ぼったくり にも ほど が ある。
koora ippai ni sanzenen mo toru nante... hoteru no baa demo bottakuri nimo hodo ga aru.
Charging 3,000 yen for a single cola... even for a hotel bar, that’s a total rip-off.

みんなの前で私の失敗を笑いのネタにするなんて、人を馬鹿にするにもほどがある。
みんな の まえ で わたし の しっぱい を わらい の ねた に する なんて、ひと を ばか に する にも ほど が ある。
minna no mae de watashi no shippai wo warai no neta ni suru nante, hito wo baka ni suru nimo hodo ga aru.
Making a joke out of my failure in front of everyone... there’s a limit to how much you can insult someone.

一つの嘘を隠すためにまた別の嘘をつくなんて、嘘を重ねるにもほどがある。もう信用できないよ。

taishite tetsudawanakatta kuseni, tegara dake ha jibun no mono ni shiyou to suru nante, zuuzuushii nimo hodo ga aru.
Trying to take all the credit when you hardly helped at all... you’ve got some nerve.

深夜に住宅街で花火をして騒ぐなんて、非常識にもほどがある。
しんや に じゅうたくがい で はなび を して さわぐ なんて、ひじょうしき にも ほど が ある。
shinya ni juutakugai de hanabi wo shite sawagu nante, hijoushiki nimo hodo ga aru.
Making a racket with fireworks in a residential area late at night is beyond a lack of common sense.
