Whether it is an "all-you-can-eat" paradise or someone "doing whatever they please" (even if it's annoying!), Japanese has the perfect word for it: 放題 (ほうだい / houdai).

It’s an advanced expression that means “to your heart’s content”, "doing as one pleases”, or “without limits.”
Depending on the situation, it can be your best friend (unlimited sushi!) or a bit of a headache (reckless behavior).

まくる (makuru) vs 三昧 (ざんまい / zanmai) vs 放題 (ほうだい / houdai)

Both まくる and 放題 describe doing something a lot, but they focus on very different aspects of the action.

まくる (makuru)
まくる is used when an action is done repeatedly, intensely, or aggressively in a short period of time. The focus is on the energy, speed, or excess of the action itself.
It often sounds emotional and dynamic, and can feel a bit rough or dramatic.

彼は一日中文句を言いまくっている。
かれ は いちにちじゅう もんく を いいまくっている。
kare ha ichinichijuu monku wo iimakutteiru.
He keeps complaining nonstop all day.

Use まくる when you want to emphasize how much or how intensely someone does something.

三昧 (ざんまい / zanmai)
三昧 describes being deeply immersed in something you enjoy.
It often has a positive, indulgent, or luxurious nuance, and is common in writing, media, or descriptions of lifestyle.

休みの日は、映画三昧の一日だった。
やすみ の ひ は、えいが ざんまい の いちにち だった。
yasumi no hi wa, eiga zanmai no ichinichi datta.
I spent the whole day indulging in movies.

Use 三昧 when you are happily absorbed in something.

放題 (ほうだい / houdai)
放題 is used when there are no limits or restrictions on an action.
The focus is on freedom rather than intensity.
Depending on context, it can sound positive (unlimited services, enjoyment) or negative (selfish or uncontrolled behavior).

彼は言いたい放題言っている。
かれ は いいたいほうだい いっている。
kare ha iitai houdai itteiru.
He says whatever he wants. (without restraint)

Use 放題 when you want to emphasize lack of limits or control, not repetition.

れんたかー が ていがく で のりほうだい に なる きゃんぺーん を みた。
rentakaa ga teigaku de norihoudai ni naru kyanpeen wo mita.
I saw a campaign where you can use rental cars as much as you want for a flat fee.

20分間、高級なイチゴが摘み放題というバスツアーに参加した。
にじゅっぷんかん、こうきゅう な いちご が つみほうだい という ばすつあー に さんか した。
nijuppunkan, koukyuu na ichigo ga tsumihoudai to iu basutsuaa ni sanka shita.
I joined a bus tour where you can pick high-quality strawberries freely for 20 minutes.

このレストランは、飲み放題や食べ放題はありますか？
この れすとらん は、のみほうだい や たべほうだい は あります か？
kono resutoran wa, nomihoudai ya tabehoudai wa arimasu ka?
Does this restaurant have all-you-can-drink or all-you-can-eat options?

誰も手入れをしていない庭は、雑草が伸び放題です。
だれ も ていれ を していない にわ は、ざっそう が のびほうだい です。
dare mo teire wo shiteinai niwa ha, zassou ga nobihoudai desu.
In the garden that no one takes care of, weeds have grown out of control.

忙しくて掃除ができず、部屋にほこりが溜まり放題だ。
いそがしくて そうじ が できず、へや に ほこり が たまりほうだい だ。
isogashikute souji ga dekizu, heya ni hokori ga tamarihoudai da.
I’ve been so busy that I couldn’t clean, and dust has piled up everywhere.

彼は自分勝手で、いつも自分のやりたい放題に物事を進める。
かれ は じぶんがって で、いつも じぶん の やりたいほうだい に ものごと を すすめる。
kare ha jibungatte de, itsumo jibun no yaritaihoudai ni monogoto wo susumeru.
He’s selfish and always pushes things forward however he wants.

今日は上司がいないので、さぼりたい放題だ！
きょう は じょうし が いない ので、さぼりたいほうだい だ！
kyou ha joushi ga inai node, saboritaihoudai da!
The boss isn’t here today, so I can slack off as much as I want!

弟は末っ子なので、両親に甘えてわがまま言いたい放題だ。
おとうと は すえっこ なので、りょうしん に あまえて わがまま いいたいほうだい だ。
otouto ha suekko nanode, ryoushin ni amaete wagamama iitaihoudai da.
Since my younger brother is the youngest, he acts spoiled and says whatever he wants to our parents.
