Have you ever seen a scandal on the news where not just one person, but the whole company was involved? Or maybe a story where an entire community worked together on a big project?

That’s the feeling behind the Japanese expression ぐるみ (gurumi).
It comes from the verb くるむ (kurumu), meaning “to wrap up” or “to include.” So ぐるみ gives the nuance of “involving everything or everyone together as a whole.”

It’s an N1 grammar point, but once you know it, you’ll start noticing it in the news, novels, and even serious dramas.

全体で (zentai de) vs. ぐるみ
全体で : focuses on the whole group as one unit. Neutral, often used in factual or formal contexts.
ぐるみ : adds nuance of “wrapped up together” with a slightly heavier or emotional feeling (often in news or serious situations).

地域全体で祭りを準備している。
ちいき ぜんたい で まつり を じゅんび して いる。
chiiki zentai de matsuri wo junbi shite iru.
The whole community is preparing for the festival.

地域ぐるみで祭りを準備している。
ちいき ぐるみ で まつり を じゅんび して いる。

地域ぐるみの清掃活動に参加した。
ちいき ぐるみ の せいそう かつどう に さんか した。
chiiki gurumi no seisou katsudou ni sanka shita.
I took part in a community-wide cleanup activity.

学校ぐるみでイベントを成功させた。
がっこう ぐるみ で いべんと を せいこう させた。
gakkou gurumi de ibento wo seikou saseta.
The entire school worked together to make the event a success.

会社ぐるみで不正を隠していたことが発覚した。
かいしゃ ぐるみ で ふせい を かくして いた こと が はっかく した。
kaisha gurumi de fusei wo kakushite ita koto ga hakkaku shita.
It was revealed that the company as a whole had been hiding fraud.

隣の佐藤さんの家とは、家族ぐるみで旅行に行くほどの仲だ。
となり の さとう さん の いえ と は、かぞく ぐるみ で りょこう に いく ほど の なか だ。
tonari no satou san no ie to ha, kazoku gurumi de ryokou ni iku hodo no naka da.
Our family is so close with the Satos next door that we even go on trips together as families.

警察は暴力団ぐるみでの犯罪を調べている。
けいさつ は ぼうりょくだん ぐるみ で の はんざい を しらべて いる。
keisatsu ha bouryokudan gurumi de no hanzai wo shirabete iru.
The police are investigating crimes involving the entire gang.
