Have you ever been in a situation where everyone is thinking one thing, but you decide to do the exact opposite?

That’s where 敢えて (あえて/aete) comes in!

It’s a sophisticated N1 expression that means "dare to," "daringly," or "deliberately." It carries the nuance of doing something even though it might be unnecessary, difficult, or even resisted by others.

Imagine you are at a meeting, and everyone is agreeing with the boss.
But you think, "Wait, there's a better way!" You know speaking up might be awkward, but you do it for the good of the project.
In that moment, you aren't just being difficult. You have a strong will and a reason!

わざと (wazato) vs 敢えて (aete)
Both mean doing something "on purpose" or "deliberately," but the "vibe" is totally different!

わざと (wazato)
わざと is neutral or often negative. It’s used when you do something intentionally, sometimes to be mean or for selfish reasons.

彼はわざと私を無視した。
かれ は わざと わたし を むし した。
kare ha wazato watashi wo mushi shita.
He ignored me on purpose. (Negative nuance)

敢えて (aete)
敢えて usually sounds positive or strategic. It shows you have a strong will or a specific goal, even if the action seems unnecessary or risky.

敢えて厳しいことを言うのは、あなたを信じているからです。
あえて きびしい こと を いう の は、あなた を しんじている から です。
aete kibishii koto wo iu no ha, anata wo shinjiteiru kara desu.
I dare to say harsh things because I believe in you. (Positive/Caring nuance)

効率は悪いけれども、私は敢えて手書きで手紙を書きます。
こうりつ は わるい けれども、わたし は あえて てがき で てがみ を かきます。
kouritsu ha warui keredomo, watashi ha aete tegaki de tegami wo kakimasu.
Although it is inefficient, I dare to write letters by hand.

この写真は今のままでも十分美しいから、敢えて修正する必要はないよ。
この しゃしん は いま の まま でも じゅうぶん うつくしい から、あえて しゅうせい する ひつよう は ない よ。
kono shashin ha ima no mama demo juubun utsukushii kara, aete shuusei suru hitsuyou ha nai yo.
This photo is beautiful enough as it is, so there's no need to dare to retouch it.

敢えて言うなら、もう少し笑顔が増えるといいですね。
あえて いう なら、もう すこし えがお が ふえると いい です ね。
aete iu nara, mou sukoshi egao ga fueru to ii desu ne.
If I dare to say, it would be great if you smiled a bit more.

彼の素晴らしい実績については、私がここで敢えて説明するまでもありません。
かれ の すばらしい じっせき に ついて は、わたし が ここ で あえて せつめい する まで も ありません。
kare no subarashii jisseki ni tsuite ha, watashi ga koko de aete setsumei suru made mo arimasen.
Regarding his wonderful achievements, it's not even worth the effort for me to dare to explain them here.

彼のミスには気づいていましたが、本人が反省しているようでしたので、敢えて何も言いませんでした。
かれ の みす に は きづいて いました が、ほんにん が はんせい している よう でした ので、あえて なにも いいませんでした。
kare no misu ni ha kizuite imashita ga, honnin ga hansei shiteiru you deshita node, aete nanimo iimasendatta.
I noticed his mistake, but since he seemed to be reflecting on it, I deliberately said nothing.

私にとって昇進のチャンスでしたが、家族との時間を優先するために敢えて辞退しました。
わたし に とって しょうしん の ちゃんす でした が、かぞく と の じかん を ゆうせん する ため に あえて じたい しました。
watashi ni totte shoushin no chansu deshita ga, kazoku to no jikan wo yuusen suru tame ni aete jitai shimashita.
It was a promotion opportunity for me, but I daringly declined it to prioritize time with my family.

難しい道だと知りながら、敢えて困難な挑戦を選んだ。
むずかしい みち だ と しり ながら、あえて こんなん な ちょうせん を えらんだ。
muzukashii michi da to shiri nagara, aete konnan na chousen wo eranda.
Knowing it was a difficult path, I daringly chose the hard challenge.

みんなが華やかで派手なドレスを着ている中で、彼女のシンプルな黒い服は「敢えての選択」として目立っていました。
みんな が はなやか で はで な どれす を きている なか で、かのじょ の しんぷる な くろい ふく は「あえて の せんたく」として めだって いました。
minna ga hanayaka de hade na doresu wo kiteiru naka de, kanojo no shinpuru na kuroi fuku ha "aete no sentaku" to shite medatte imashita.
While everyone was wearing gorgeous and flashy dresses, her simple black outfit stood out as a "deliberate choice."

敢えて、ここで私は皆さんの意見に反対させていただきます。
あえて、ここで わたし は みなさん の いけん に はんたい させて いただきます。
aete, koko de watashi ha minasan no iken ni hantai sasete itadakimasu.
Daringly, I would like to voice my opposition to everyone's opinion here.
